Digital Marketing Masterclass 2:

PR 2.0 - Legal 2.0: Issues from the Social Network;
Voices at the Digital Frontier

Register your FREE place at: http://www.business.mmu.ac.uk/digitalmarketing/

Thursday 22nd November 2007 17:45 – 20:00
MEP Lecture Theatre (MEP) MMU Business School, Aytoun Street, Manchester M1 3GH

We keep seeing the term Web 2.0 used (often in a very poor way), but what are the PR and legal issues for Digital marketers interested in exploring and exploiting social media networks and non-real world environments? What have we not even thought about yet?

Our speakers are Rob Brown, PR Director at McCann-Erickson and Raj Mahapatra, Managing Director at VLegal.

In “PR 2.0”, Rob will look at the implications for communicators in an era where the audience has taken control. In “Legal 2.0” Raj will explore how the Web is no longer the lawless state that it was. Barely keeping up with technology, how is it preparing for the future?

There will be time for questions after each both speakers. After the event, we will be holding a social networking event for the Manchester Digital Marketers at The Bull’s Head on London Road.

Facebook moves up a gear

Some of you may have seen this already, but Facebook flyers are now getting highly targeted and they've moved to a pay-per-click facility. This means you can target ads towards a certain profile of customer and you only pay if they click on the link. This is quite a change for Facebook, because they historically only targeted networks and it was based on CPM rather than PPC. Have a look here.

5A3150: Your starter for 10

Here's an interesting DM proposition. This is Groove Armada's web site.

What's it used for? Is it used for the existing fans? New fans? How do fans know it's there? What entices them to come back? It's an expensive site but is it worth it?

Welcome to The City of Dead Souls for 2007 and 2008

Hello to those of you studying on Digital Marketing & Electronic Relationship Management. Our social learning community is up and ready for you to use. Please take some time to read some of the older messages on the blog (there are some interesting links). Also - please take some time to register on the community properly. Please use your student ID as your ID here or make sure you put your MMU email address as your contact in the registration details. Lots of spambots attempt to register here, so if a user is not obviously an MMU student (either ID or email address), then that user won't get registered and the details will be wiped. Click on the link on the left for the details.

If you are studying Michelle Morris' 5A3170 DBSE unit, the same rules apply. Michelle will give you more details during your sessions with her.

Shutting down the City of Dead Souls community for Summer

It's the time of year when we'll be shutting the community down for the summer. This allows us to do some important updates of software and reduces the amount of spambots that try to self-register and spam the community with unwanted posts. The forums will be back up again at the beginning of September.

5A3150 DMERM & 5A3170 DBSE Returning Assignments

It's time for you to return all of the assignments that you have had returned to you during the last 2 terms. You need to do this so that external examiners can review the assessment and modify grades where appropriate. This is particularly important if your grades are near the borders between classifications. You should return them to my office 1004a, or to the R&M programme office on the 11th floor, or bring them to an assignment surgery or workshop. If you have lost or misplaced your assignment, you will need to print it out again and write "REPRINT" on the front, and I will attach a marking schedule to it.

5A3150 DMERM & 5G3120 SCAP Fake Adverts

This model photoshopped an ad for Gucci using a photo of himself (he doesn't work for Gucci and it wasn't sanctioned by them). He asked a newpaper in Switzerland to run it and told tem to send the 50000 Euros bill to Gucci - they don't want to pay for something which is not theirs and the newspaper cannot locate the person who did this - oh dear, and he's done it before apparently. Follow the on page links (one of which is in German).

OK - just so you know:

5A3170 DBSE & 5A3150 DMERM Exploding the Second Life Myth

Interesting reflection here on how real the marketplace inside Second Life actually is. Linden has been criticised for not being open enough about population size, but this blog entry explores some of the issues of population of this virtual world - what impact does this have on business ventures and marketing opportunities?

5A3150 DMERM & 5G3120 SCAP Cynicism about Viral

The growth of "Flogs" (Fake Blogs) along with obvious virals is beginning to create a level of cynicism amongst internet users about such tools. This article details a number of interesting examples and viewpoints to consider, and links to an earlier posting on cityofdeadsouls.

5A3150 DMERM & 5G3120 SCAP Making Astroturfing Illegal

The act of astroturfing (definition here) is about to become a whole lot more difficult. From the article 'Businesses which write fake blog entries or create whole websites purporting to be from customers will fall foul of a European directive banning them from “falsely representing oneself as a consumer”.' Also an interesting commentary from the community here.
